Railway Information

The state run railway system in the country of India, Indian Railways is the fourth largest railway system in the world. Furthermore, it is the largest employer in India, and the second largest employer in the world.

Indian Railways  is an Indian state-owned railway company headquartered in New Delhi, India. It is owned and operated by theGovernment of India through the Ministry of Railways. Indian Railways has 114,500 kilometres of total track over a route of 65,000 kilometres  and 7,500 stations. It has the world's fourth largest railway network. .

Indian Railways had its modest beginnings in the late 1800s when Britain began building railroads to connect India’s largest cities. In 1849, the railway system in India was non-existent, but by 1929, there were more than 41,000 miles of railroads serving every district in the country. When India gained its independence from Great Britain in 1947, the railway system was in shambles. The cause of this was underinvestment and a vast network of railroads that were difficult to maintain. In order to help improve the railways of India, the new Indian government consolidated the forty two different railway systems in the country into Indian Railways. From this point forward, better maintenance and modernization have made Indian Railways a crucial mode of transportation for Indians and commerce.
